The Yuganiki Okkadu story begins in 1279 A.D., at the height of the Chola dynasty's downfall. As the Pandyas drive the Chola people out of their kingdom in southern India, the Chola emperor, to save the life of his successor and his people, sends his son, his Royal Advisor, and the remaining Chola citizens to a secret, hidden territory, taking with them an idol sacred to the Pandyas. Centuries later, in 2008, an archeologist (Pratap Pothan) goes missing while searching for the lost Chola kingdom. This prompts the government to send a rescue mission led by Anitha (Reema Sen), a ruthless and duty-minded army officer. She is joined by Lavanya (Andrea Jeremiah), the missing archeologist's daughter.
Yuganiki Okkadu explores themes of time travel, identity, and the cyclical nature of power. It introduces a bio-scientist who invents a revolutionary medicine and a character transformed by it, adding a layer of science fiction to the historical epic. Despite mixed reviews—some critics found the first half disjointed while praising the second half's visual grandeur—the film was noted for its ambitious scope. Made on a budget of approximately ₹32 crore and involving over 2,000 artists, it was a technically audacious project for its time.
