The story of Los Kjarkas begins in the mid-1960s. Originally formed in 1965 in Capinota by three teenage brothers—Wilson, Castel, and Gonzalo Hermosa—alongside guitarist Edgar Villarroel, the group started as a modest quartet playing in small towns. The name "Kjarkas" derives from the Quechua word q'arka , which means "brave" or "strong," but it also reflects their humble beginnings, as it can be interpreted as "nothing" or "out of tune," a self-deprecating nod to their early, unpolished sound.
When you listen to a modern track like "Imillitay" or revisit the classic "Tiempo al Tiempo," you are hearing a lineage. You hear the younger members carrying the torch, the apprentices who became masters. You hear the voice of Gonzalo, older now, richer, like a wine aged in the barrels of time. Un disco conceptual que elevó el estatus del grupo. Contiene composiciones complejas que fusionaban la mística andina con una estructura lírica sofisticada.
To understand the discography, one must start at the beginning. Founded in 1965 in Capinota, Cochabamba, by the Hermosa brothers (Wilson, Gonzalo, and Ulises), the band officially began recording in the early 1970s. Their early sound was raw, utilizing the charango , quena , and bombo to narrate the struggles and joys of the Andean people. Modern Classics & Live Albums: Si te interesa
