With a runtime of 210 minutes, the film featured an extended plot. After Ambikapathy saves the king's life in a war against the Kalinga kingdom, he is rewarded with a special sword. The jealous army commander, Rudrasenan, provokes a sword fight, during which Princess Amaravathi sees Ambikapathy and falls in love with him. Their secret meetings are eventually discovered by the king, who sentences Ambikapathy to death. As a final test, he is challenged to sing a hundred poems on the subject of war and politics ( puram ), with no mention of love ( aram ).
